Experience is a plus, but is not a necessity because of our extensive training program which is explained in detail below.

What the job entails:

This is a full time position including vacation, sick/personal time, medical benefits and a 401(k) profit sharing plan.

We’ll enroll you in our Registered Apprenticeship Training Program and teach you everything you need to know about heating and air conditioning (HVAC) to ultimately becoming a Licensed New Jersey Certified Master HVACR Contractor. You’ll also get your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and learn how to drive a fuel truck and make deliveries to our customers. Depending upon the time of year and our workload, you may be asked to flip back and forth between being a heating & cooling technician and a professional driver.

Once you are fully trained as a heating & cooling technician you’ll be provided with a company van and all the equipment you need to install, service and repair heating and air conditioning systems for our customers. Most times you’ll be working on your own but other times you’ll be working as part of a team.

Every day you have a chance to be a hero. You’ll be keeping our customers warm in the winter and cool in the summer and they’ll love you for it. They’ll give you sincere appreciation, tips and if you’re lucky, on occasion a piece of apple pie hot out of the oven.

We’re serious about providing our customers with outstanding service. So you’ll be expected to have a great attitude and the technical proficiency (see training below) to make outstanding service happen. Once you’re fully trained and working on the heating & cooling side of things, one of your responsibilities will be to participate in a rotation with our other technicians to handle emergency calls in the evenings and on weekends.

This will allow you to receive a number of significant benefits:

  • Extra “stand by” money for each day you are on call.
  • Time and one-half for all emergency calls.

Job Security:

Are you tired of worrying about being laid off or losing your job? All professions are affected to some degree by the health of the economy. However the heating/cooling industry is affected much less in an economic downturn than other industries. When recessions occur, people will cut back on discretionary expenditures. However, they will always need to be warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Because heating & cooling systems are necessities, heating/cooling (HVAC) professionals and CDL drivers enjoy unusually good job security.

Worldwide Opportunity:

Industrialized countries around the world use central heating and air conditioning systems in both residential and commercial buildings. These systems run more than the average automobile. Whether you are freezing in Alaska, sweating in Florida or chilling in California, heating and air conditioning systems need annual maintenance and if they breakdown, need to be repaired quickly and efficiently. Anyone who is skilled in this field can go anywhere in the industrialized world and get a high paying job. We know of a heating/cooling (HVAC) technician who moved to the United States from South Korea. Although his English was iffy, he had no trouble finding work.

Challenging and rewarding work:

There are 3 basic types of heating systems, warm air, hot water (hydronic) and steam. Within these categories there are many different types of equipment. Air conditioning can be totally separate or, in some cases, incorporated into the heating system. New systems are constantly being developed which operate more efficiently and in a more environmentally friendly way. Keeping up with these changes assures you’ll never get bored.

If you like working with your hands, enjoy learning, are up for a challenge and like to see people with a smile on their face, this may be the job for you.

Training Program:

If you’ve taken courses or have experience in the HVAC field, great. If not, don’t worry. As long as you have the aptitude and attitude to excel in the field, we’re prepared to train you. Why are we willing to take the time and spend the money to do this? The answer is that there is a national shortage of CDL drivers and good heating/cooling (HVAC) technicians. Our willingness to find, hire and train great people gives us an advantage over our competitors.

In 3 months, our training program will teach you as much as you’d learn if you went to school at night for 18 months. First, we send you out with an experienced technician so you become familiar with the major parts of an HVAC system, learn some terminology and get a feel for what heating/cooling (HVAC) technicians do on a daily basis. After dipping your toes into the water, we move into the second phase of the training which takes approximately 9` weeks.

You’ll receive a mix of formal classroom training combined with practical experience in the field. We’ll send you for 4 weeks of classroom training. Additional formal training will be provided through HVACRedu.net, the largest online HVAC training provider. The field experience comes from working with one or more of our experienced technicians. This mixture of theory combined with field experience accelerates the learning curve. Once you finish the formal training program, we start to send you out on your own and slowly bring you along. Our training program qualifies as a US Department of Labor approved HVACR Apprenticeship program, which will put on track to ultimately become a licensed New Jersey Master HVACR Contractor.

During the training period, we pay your salary and all costs associated with the training program. We will be making a big investment in you and the only way we can get a return on our investment is if you work for us for a while. Therefore, we will ask you to sign a reimbursement agreement, which lasts three years, and covers a portion of the costs associated with the training. Reimbursement agreements are standard practice in industry and are routinely used by police departments when they train new officers. The purpose of the reimbursement agreement is to insure we get a reasonable return on our investment. If you take a job with another heating/cooling (HVAC) contractor, they will be getting the benefit of the training we gave you and should be expected to pay for part of the cost.

We’ll also send you out with an experienced professional driver so you can get your CDL and learn how to deliver heating oil to our customers.

Price Protection Programs for 2022 - 2023 Heating Season

For over 25 years, Hart & Iliff has offered a winter price protection program for our heating oil customers.  Initially, we offered both a fixed price and a capped price program.  In the last few years, we transitioned away from a fixed price, because it offers no downside protection, if the price drops.  Even though it’s been clearly disclosed, each time prices drop during the winter, customers are extremely unhappy about being locked in at a higher price.  For example, during the 2014/2015 heating season prices dropped $1.40 per gallon during the winter.  This could easily happen again this winter.

Comfort Line - Spring/Summer 2022

Unsurprisingly, we’ve received calls about two connected issues—the surge in fuel prices and supply concerns. Russia is the world’s third largest oil producer, generating approximately 11% of total world production. The Russian invasion of Ukraine shocked the energy markets, sending crude oil to record territory and spiking all energy prices. We saw increases from our heating oil suppliers of more than $1.50 per gallon in less than a week! People are also concerned that there will be interruptions in supply that will cause them to run out of fuel. You can count on the fact that Hart & Iliff will not let you run out of oil. We have been in business for more than 130 years and have very strong relationships with suppliers and financial institutions.
